According to a report in India.com, Benegal stated, ''Returning of awards has become a kind of an epidemic. I don’t agree with it,” said Benegal According to the veteran, intolerance is not the only issue which poses a threat to our democracy. “Due to our diversity, we not only need tolerance but also acceptance and inclusiveness,''

He further added, ''Surely you have to raise your voice against religious intolerance. I don’t disagree with that, But returning the awards is not a solution. If you are going to fight Government, fight it in most democratic terms that are given to you politically,''

The awards being returned by historians, writers and artists have triggered a number of controversies and people belonging to different school of thoughts have expressed their respective views.
