Northern Alliance president Burhanuddin Rabbani on Friday said he was for the right of Afghan women to vote and hold office.

“Women should have the right to be elected and to elect,” Rabbani told a news conference in Kabul.
Since marching into Kabul on November 13, the Northern Alliance has made several gestures to free up the lives of women who were severely circumscribed under the ousted Taliban regime.
The alliance issued a decree encouraging women to return to school and work, allowed women to broadcast over radio and television and permitted them to take off the once obligatory burqa that covered them from head to toe. Bureau Report
