Three killed in police firing, 28 injured in clash at Durgapur
Durgapur (WB), Sept 04: Three persons were killed in police firing and 28 others, including 12 policemen, injured in a clash which was triggered by a truck crushing to death three persons here, police said.

While one person was killed on the spot in the police firing, two others who were seriously injured later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, the police said.
Trouble began when a truck crushed to death three persons of a family at the busy Bhiringi more on the GT Road at the steel city of Durgapur of Bardhaman district. Immediately after the accident, an irate mob put up a road blockade and set on fire two lorries and six scooters.
When a police team reached the spot, the crowd started pelting stones and set on fire the police vehicle. The police made a lathicharge and fired tear gas shells in which 18 persons were injured. The circle inspector of police Asit Chakraborty, officer-in-charge S Mukherje and 10 policemen were also injured in the stone pelting.
As lathicharge and teargas failed to control the mob, police opened fire. Thirty-four persons were arrested so far, the police said.
Meanwhile, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) has given a call for a 12-hour Durgapur bandh tomorrow to protest the police firing. The Trinamool Congress and Congress have also extended support to the bandh. Bureau Report
