About 195 workers of Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP), including its Vice President Mehbooba Mufti, were arrested on Monday for defying prohibitory orders near Shalimar Chowk-civil secretariat area in Jammu city, official sources said. The workers were later released.
The PDP workers led by Mufti had taken out a procession from Vivekanand Chowk and were proceeding to Raj Bhavan gate to stage a demonstration against the alleged failure of the state government on all fronts, including spurt in militancy in Jammu division.
As the procession of over 1500 PDP activists proceeded towards Shalimar Chowk, they were stopped by a strong police contingent and asked to disperse in view of prohibitory orders imposed in the Shalimar-secretariat area. However, the PDP workers raised slogans against the government and later police took into custody about 195 of them, the sources said, adding they were taken to district police lines in buses and later released.
PDP general secretary Ved Mahajan, however claimed that 325 of their activists were arrested and later released by police.
He said a five-member delegation led by party's Vice-President would submit a memorandum to the governor, G C Saxena, at Raj Bhavan in the evening. Bureau Report
