London, Aug 06: London's team bidding for the 2012 Olympics has promised an environmentally friendly games that would be spread across the city.
"The International Olympic Committee rightly expects the Olympic games to be held in a way which demonstrates a genuine concern for the environment," London Mayor Ken Livingstone said. "I welcome that, and the central vision of my London plan is that London should be an exemplary sustainable world
city."
No permanent facilities would be built on two existing green spaces in the city's east end - where much of the games would take place - and "the highest possible standards of environmentally sustainable design and construction" would be used, Livingstone added. "The Olympic Games provides the perfect platform to demonstrate that we can be green world-beaters," he said.
The entire city would be used for the games, not just the east end, bid leader Barbara Cassani said.
"The impression has been created amongst some very important key informers that the (east end) is the only place where the games will be taking place. That is not the case," said Cassani. The IOC will select the host city in Singapore in July 2005.
London is one of nine cities in the race. The others are Paris; New York; Moscow; Madrid, Spain; Istanbul, Turkey; Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Leipzig, Germany, and Havana, Cuba.
