"George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin were married today (September 27) in a private ceremony in Venice, Italy," Clooney's spokesman Stan Rosenfield confirmed.

The announcement came as a surprise to many as the couple was not expected to get married until Monday. However, they are still tipped for a civil ceremony to officialise their marriage under the Italian law.

Several Hollywood biggies descended on the Italian city's canal for the union between the industry's most eligible bachelor and his fiancee Ms Alamuddin. Matt Damon, Bono, Bill Murray, Emily Blunt, Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber were among the several high profile guests present at the grand event.

According to reports, the 53-year-old actor donned a dashing Armani tux while his lady looked dazzling in a gown by red-carpet maestro Oscar de la Renta.

Amal Alamuddin however remained away from media eye during the ceremony. She was last seen publicly on Friday riding in a water taxi down the Grand Canal with Clooney.

Clooney and the human rights lawyer Amal got engaged in April and obtained their marriage licenses in August, this year.

Here's wishing the couple a happy married life!
