Probe ordered into illegal sex determination tests in Delhi
A Delhi court has ordered probe against a city-based doctor for allegedly performing pre-natal sex determination test in violation of law.
A Delhi court has ordered probe against a city-based doctor for allegedly performing pre-natal sex determination test in violation of law.
Terming the case as of public importance, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Sangeeta Dhingra Sehgal directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (central district) to get the same investigated by an officer not below the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
The court sought progress report by September One. The CMM's order against Dr P D Gupta came on a complaint filed by the Director of Family Welfare of Delhi government requesting the court that a case be filed against Dr Gupta and necessary action may please be taken accordingly under intimation to the directorate.
Dr Gupta, an MD in radiodiagnosis and a resident of 38, Shankar Vihar in East Delhi, runs a clinic called P D Gupta Mediscan Centre (P) ltd at 70, Darya Ganj in old Delhi. The complaint alleged that Dr Gupta was performing ultrasound tests and did not maintain a proper record of ultrasound tests conducted at his clinic.
Non-maintenance of such record is also punishable under sections 23(9) and 25 of the act, the complaint stated. Earlier, an English daily had published a report pointing that a specific clinic in Daryaganj was indulging in ultrasounds promoting female foeticide.
