Aman Mathur, the happy-go-lucky guy of Kal Ho Naa Ho, riding on the crest of the box office wave finally loses Naina Catherine Kapur a.k.a. Preity Zinta, his love and in the climax loses his life. The end result? KHNH is a grosser at the box office ticket window!
Already given a 4 star by critics, it falls short of a chocolate romance-a 5 star! And yes as the celluloid Amans, Rohits and Rajs keep dying and losing eternally in film after film, SRK continues to rule the roost. The indefatigable and unchallenged super duper star of silver screen, SRK as he is addressed in reverence has had long innings of flops and misses before he became a hit. But he has been a loser all the way.
A look at his filmography would confirm the fact. In the year 1991, he flopped as an Idiot. Though the 1993 release Darr was a great hit, he was the loser. He lost K-k-k-kiran and then he loses his life in Baazigar as well. The same year Pehla Nasha crashes at the box office! In 1994 Anjaam repeats history, SRK loses Madhuri and his life.
1995’s Guddu opposite Manisha Koirala, Zamana Deewana with Raveena Tandon, Subhash Ghai’s Trimurti and Ketan Mehta’s Oh Darling Yeh Hai India are big flops. King Khan loses out! Raam Jaane is a hit and Shah Rukh proves his histrionics by laying his life on the screen, and loses his life once more!
The year 1996’s Army, Chahat, English Babu Desi Mem, Dushman Duniya Ka and Gudgudee (SRK in special appearance) fared badly at theatres.1997 was a good year with Dil To Pagal Hai, Pardes and Yes Boss becoming super hits! But 1998 sees two average films- Duplicate and Dil Se. A guest appearance in Achanak comes a cropper in cinema halls but Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a life saver and a blockbuster.

1999’s Badshah with Twinkle Khanna is an average movie. Come next year and the new millennium brings two flops- Husain’s Gajagamini and Hasan’s Hey Ram, while home production Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani is a dud.

SRK loses out as a producer in box office collections. In 2001, Dreamz Unlimited’s dreams are limited by the great conqueror Asoka, who fails to conquer the box office fortress! The same year buddy and business partner Juhi Chawla starrer One Two Ka Four bombs, while K3G is a smash hit!
Year 2002 on the other hand turns out to be good. The loser plays a loser in the magnum opus Devdas. The film draws huge crowds across the country. Sridevi produced Shakti but Ishq Kamina fails at multiplexes and halls.

In the year 2003, home production Chalta Chalte rings cash at box office and SRK finally emerges a winner as a producer!

So 48 films in a 12 year career, 22 flops and averages and 26 hits. Out of the hits and misses, SRK plays the Romeo-waiting-in-the-wings or dies in the climax in 15 movies. Do tragedies or romances make sense as a foolproof sure shot hit formula for a hit film, is still being worked out by producers and directors alike but the fact remains that SRK comes at a cost of Rs. 3 crore per film.

The actor might be a loser on the screen but he is a winner all along. Making hay while the sun shines because you never know, KAL HO NAA HO!
