New York, Aug 27: Top seed Kim Clijsters ambled into the third round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday, humbling American Laura Granville 6-1 6-1 on centre court.
The Belgian world number one blasted her 47th-ranked opponent in just 49 minutes to advance. She will next take on Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, a 6-3 6-3 winner over Hungary's Petra Mandula. Amelie Mauresmo raced into the third round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday, trouncing fellow Frenchwoman Stephanie Cohen-Aloro 6-2 6-2.
The fifth seed, a semi-finalist here 12 months ago, spent 60 minutes dispatching her compatriot to book a match against either Germany's Anca Barna or Maria Kirilenko of Russia. Also advancing was Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova who beat a moon-balling Julia Vakulenko 6-0 7-6 to reach the third round. The lanky ninth seed, subject of much speculation at Wimbledon about her diet and slender frame, overcame the Ukrainian in an edgy match on Armstrong stadium court.
