Chandigarh, Apr 22: Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today announced 33 per cent reservation for women in his party, enabling them to represent the people of their area in the state legislature as well as Lok Sabha. Presiding over a consultation meet on 'challenges for women in the new millennium" organised by Haryana State Commission for Women and sponsored by the National Commission for Women, here today Chautala said his INLD party had taken several measures to enhance the dignity of women.
Referring to the plight of women prisoners, he suggested that instead of detaining them in jails, especially those pregnant or having children less than seven years, they should be kept under house arrest.
He also urged voluntary organisations to make judicious use of government funds for implementation of welfare schemes.
Chairperson of National Commission for Women, Dr Poornima Advani expressed concern over the increase in the cases of female foeticide in the state and said the issue should be discussed threadbare to curb gender bias.
She said a report on the status of women in Haryana was under preparation and sought contributions from experts being prepared. She asked the delegates to contribute for the same. Bureau Report
