United Nations,July 20: Asking the United Nations to expand the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul, head of the UN operations in Afghanistan said al-Qaeda and Taliban remain a threat to the stability in the war ravaged country. Chief of UN operations in Afghanistan Lakhdar Brahimi urged Security Council member-states yesterday to help stabilize situation in areas outside the Afghan capital especially in the north where warlords still rule.
There was weak international support for ISAF expansion but the measure would improve the security situation enormously "with relatively few troops, relatively little cost and with little danger," Brahimi told the world body He said al-Qaeda and Taliban still remain a threat to the stability in Afghanistan and it was unclear "how many members of the Taliban and al-Qaeda are left in the country and what kind of threat they really pose to the stability of Afghanistan remain unanswered. Until we have evidence to the contrary, we must assume that these groups can still pose a threat." Bureau Report
