In Assam, it could be a photo finish, with the Congress leading in 53 constituencies and the AGP-BJP-led alliance ahead in 27, as counting trends trickled in from the 125 constituencies, which went to the polls. Assam chief minister P K Mahanta lost the crucial Dispur seat but is leading in Behrampur. Three Congress candidates won as the results were declared.
Himanta Biswa Sarma of the Congress has won the Jalukbari assembly seat in Assam, defeating his nearest NCP rival and sitting MLA Bhrigu Kumar Phukan by 1,200 votes.
Pankaj Bora, also of the Congress won the Guwahati East assembly seat defeating his nearest AGP rival and Municipal administration Minister Biraj Kumar Sarma by 12,224 votes. Hemanta Talukdar (Congress) won the Guwahati West Assam assembly seat defeating his nearest AGP rival and sericulture Minister Ramendra Narayan Kalita by 5,500 votes.
Although the state has been late with the results coming in, as against some of the other states, where major results have sprung, the broad trend shows leads for a majority of candidates favouring the Congress. Party workers have begun early celebrations, anticipating a return to power.
