Patna, Jan 23: At least 125 persons have lost their lives in Bihar as severe cold conditions persisted in the state with mercury dipping further in many places and throwing life out of gear. Twenty five more deaths were reported since Tuesday - 10 from Kaimur, eight from Rohtas, four from Gaya and three from east Champaran pushing the toll to 125, official sources said.
In Patna, which is reeling under unprecedented cold conditions, the mercury touched a minimum of 2.9 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature too fell to 15.6 C, met office sources said.
There was no sunshine till late during the day for the second consecutive day today in the state capital and people were seen trying to warm themselves around bonfires.
Reports reaching from the districts said icy winds forced people to remain indoors.
Gaya recorded a minimum of 3.7 degrees C and a maximum of 17.1, while Bhagalpur experienced a minimum of 5.3 C and a maximum of 13.7, the sources said.
Train and flight services were affected due to poor visibility and thick fog, railway sources said adding several trains were running five to eight hours behind schedule.
The severe cold has affected potato, maize, pulses, oil-seeds and boro paddy crops stunting their growth, agricultural experts said.
All the schools in the state capital have been closed till January 25, official sources said. Bureau Report
