New Delhi, Oct 20: Domestic two-wheeler sales went up by 24 per cent during the first six months this fiscal on the back of a booming motorcycle market even as scooters and mopeds continued to post negative growth. A total of 24 lakh two-wheelers were sold during April-September, 2002 over 19.36 lakh units a year ago as companies like Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company made merry of growing consumer preference for motorcycles over scooters, data compiled by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers' showed.
Sale of motorcycle and step-thrus surged by 43 per cent year-on-year to 17.86 lakh units from 12.49 lakh units.

India's largest motorcycle maker Hero Honda Motors posted a 30 per cent rise at 8.19 lakh units while that of closest rival Bajaj Auto grew by 39.5 per cent to 4.19 lakh units.
Chennai-based TVS, which has been riding on the success of the 'Victor' motorcycle, recorded a massive 99 per cent jump at 3.41 lakh units.

Sales of Yamaha Motor India jumped by 47.3 per cent to 1.42 lakh units (97,039 units) which is largely attributed to growing sales of the 125cc cruiser motorcycle 'Enticer'.
LML, whose sales have been increasing after the launch of 110cc motorcycle 'Freedom', posted a 51.7 per cent growth at 28,062 units while that of Kinetic Engineering grew by 6.8 per cent to 23,651 units. Bureau Report
