Kathmandu, Nov 26: Nine Maoist rebels, two policemen and a woman bystander were killed in a series of skirmishes between the guerrillas and Nepal's security forces, officials said today.
In the southwestern district of Bardiya, a group of Maoists and police traded fire for about half an hour yesterday at a marketplace in Bhusegaon, leaving two policemen and a woman shopper dead, officials said.
"The Maoists involved in the shooting ran away into the surrounding jungle," the District's Chief Officer, B P Tiwara, told Nepalese radio.
Nine Maoists were also killed in at least four other gunfights across the kingdom yesterday, a defence ministry official said here.

At least 219 people were killed, according to police and army officials.
The Maoists have been fighting since 1996 to topple the constitutional monarchy and establish a communist state. Their "people's war" has left more than 7,200 people dead, according to security forces.
