Two patrolling policemen were killed and seven seriously injured in an ambush by Maoist rebels at Tanahu district in western Nepal. Inspector Govinda Poudel and assistant sub-inspector Khil Bahadur Bhandari of the district police office, Tanahun, died en route to the western regional hospital, Pokhara, police said.
The injured are being treated at the same hospital.
Senior police officers, including deputy inspector general of police Kumar Koirala and dig of armed police force Basudev Oli, escaped the attack that took place in Ritthepani village. Army and police personnel have been deployed in the area.
Meanwhile, a bomb disposal unit of the army on Friday defused a powerful banner bomb in Lalitpur, police said.
The army also shot dead a Maoist sniping on a patrol at Magkot in Rolpa district, the defence ministry said, adding that forces arrested two persons and recovered ammunition from them.
