Krishnagar (WB), May 23: Nadia district lawyers today demanded arrest of the Nadia district consumers' forum chairman S K Basu, whose bodyguard had shot and injured the secretary of the Krishnagar Court Bar Association on May 18. The lawyers, who submitted a deputation to district magistrate Krishna Gupta, also demanded adequate compensation within seven days for Debasish Ray, the injured bar association secretary and a local Congress leader.
The Bar Council of West Bengal had also demanded Basu's arrest and an independent inquiry by a sitting judge of the high court.
The Nadia lawyers decided to demonstrate for an hour everyday for a week in all courts of the district. If the demands were not fulfilled by then, they would submit a deputation to the district superintendent of police.
While leading a gherao of the consumer forum chairman to protest shifting of the forum from Krishnanagar court premises, ray was shot twice in the abdomen by Basu's security guard in an attempt to free him from the mob.
The guard Biswanath Mondal was arrested on the day of the incident. Bureau Report
