Becks revels in popularity post-Man U prior to Liechtenstein clash
Manchester, Sept 11: England captain David Beckham comments on Euro 2004 qualifier with Liechtenstein.
Manchester, Sept 11: England captain David Beckham comments on Euro 2004 qualifier with Liechtenstein.
David Beckham said he was pleased with his team's win over Liechtenstein 2-0 on Wednesday (September 10) but would not be drawn on prospects for the forthcoming Euro 2004 qualifier against Turkey.
"We are looking forward to it," was all the England captain would say. The victory at Old Trafford ensured that England only need a draw in their last match in Istanbul on October 11 to qualify as Group Seven winners.
Beckham said he was delighted with the rapturous applause he received on his first appearance at Old Trafford since leaving Manchester United for Real Madrid in the summer.
"I played here for 15 years so I knew there would be some people happy to see me," he said. England should head to Turkey looking to win rather than settling for the point that will secure their qualification to Euro 2004 said Steven Gerrard after the match.
"As I said we won't be holding back and playing defensively," he said. "It means that we can go there and score a few goals and get a comfortable win."
Gerrard was the provider for both Michael Owen's and Wayne Rooney's second half goals, and avoided the booking that would have ruled him out of the Turkey clash, before being substituted along with David Beckham in the 58th minute.
Gerrard said: "It was nice to get the result and my team mate Michael and also Wayne, but I thought Wayne was absolutely magnificent tonight, deserved man of the match, and hopefully he can put in a lot more performances like that for England."
