Kozhikode, Feb 27: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes today held a sitting at the Kalpetta Collectorate in Wyanad district to collect evidence from people on the recent police firing and subsequent incidents in Muthanga forest range.
Commission chairman, Bizay Sonkar Shastri and a member of the commission, C Chellappan, held the sitting after visiting Muthanga, police sources said.
The commission had received complaints that the police had allegedly subjected adivasis to brutal harassment following the violent incidents at Muthanga that claimed two
lives on Wednesday last.
The commission had already demanded a judicial probe into the police firing and had asked the UDF government to take a "sympathetic" view towards the hapless tribals and provide the adequate protection.
Over 250 tribals, including their leaders, C K Janu and M Geethanandan, had been remanded to judicial custody in connection with the 45-day-long agitation that later turned violent.
