Monza, Sep 02: Jordan's Ralph Firman will miss testing at Monza this week to give himself more time to recover from his crash in practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The 28-year-old Briton had hoped for a quick return after injuring his heel and being knocked unconscious in a 150mph accident at the Hungaroring.

A Jordan spokeswoman said that after a medical consultation on Monday, Firman would not be testing at Monza, which hosts the Italian Grand Prix on 14 September.

But he still hopes to be fully recovered in time for the race itself.

"He has decided to take a little bit more time and resume his training programme and be fit for the grand prix next week," the spokeswoman added.
Firman was replaced in Budapest by Hungary's Zsolt Baumgartner, who may now also take over testing duties alongside the team's other driver, Italian Giancarlo Fisichella.

Baumgartner has already been confirmed for a two hour test session at Monza on 12 September.

Firman's accident happened when the rear wing of his car broke off and, unable to control the car, he slammed sideways into a tyre wall.

He returned to the Hungaroring on crutches on the day of the race after being released from hospital, and was confident the accident would not affect him. "I am looking forward to Monza and because I don't remember the impact it won't be a problem," he said.

"My left ankle is just badly bruised. It doesn't hurt, but if you stand on it hurts.

"My neck is a bit sore but there's no mobility problems, no swelling, nothing."

Firman's place at Jordan is in jeopardy next year after scoring just one point in 12 races.

"I have always wanted to stay here," Firman added. "I have had a chat with Eddie (Jordan) about next year but I think he has a few other things to sort out first.

"We have got to concentrate on the next three races and make the most of them.

"But if they need two paying drivers then it is going to be difficult to stay here. If they don't then I still have a good chance."
