Srinagar, Jan 16: Asserting that cross-border infiltration was going on, army today said the militants might attempt to carry out attacks on the Republic Day to attract publicity.
"They (militants) might try to carry out attacks as it gives the publicity that keeps them alive. But the victims of these attacks are unfortunately the general people. The militants want to intimidate them," commander of 15 corps of army Lt Gen G B Patankar told reporters here after meeting a group of NCC cadets from Maharashtra.
On the renewed focus of militant attacks on the civilians, Patankar said that the militants had failed in persuading the people to do what they wanted so were now resorting to strong-arm methods. "The whole idea is to terrorise the population," he said.

Patankar said that the cross-border infiltration from Pakistan was continuing but he declined to give any further details. It is difficult to put a figure on the cross-border infiltration but it is continuing, he added.
Asked about Chief of Army staff Gen N C Vij's remarks on the army day, Patankar said that he was referring to new operations in the light of the new equipment obtained by the army. This would help in carrying out the operations better. The army has otherwise been doing such operations earlier on.

Patankar expressed happiness over the support of local population, which he claimed has been forthcoming lately, in carrying out anti-insurgency operations.
“The people of Kashmir have realised the nefarious designs of Pakistan is taking us to the path of destruction. People are coming around and this faith of the people has been the strength of the army,” he said.
