Government said on Friday that bulk consumers of power will be allowed to buy electricity from their choice of producers, a measure that would help reduce costs. This is one of the provisions of the new Electricity Bill 2001, which has been tabled in Parliament, Union Power Minister Suresh Prabhu said at 'Paperex 2001'.
“Government has been working on various methods to reduce the cost of power for the industry including paper industry which is a bulk consumer of power,” Prabhu said, adding that early passage of the bill would enable the paper industry and other bulk consumers to purchase electricity from their choice of generators. “For the paper industry to become globally competitive, it must reduce costs of inputs especially power,” he said.
“Besides, Energy Conservation Bill would also help the industry to save energy leading to reduction in cost of power consumed,” he said and added, “We want the industry to implement self-regulatory mechanism with regard to energy conservation.”
Prabhu said that paper industry, one of the fastest growing industry in the last decade, had to be competitive to face the challenge of increasing imports.
