Wellington, June 26: Two sharp earthquakes shook the township of Tirau, about 215 km south of Auckland, within 16 minutes today, the institute of geological and nuclear sciences reported. Recorded at magnitudes of 4.8 and 4.5, both were centered 10 kilometres from the township and at a depth of 12 kilometres.

They followed shakes of 5.3 and 4.8 recorded in Hawke's Bay, North Island, and the Te Anau region of the south island on Tuesday night.
