Madrid, May 18: The London media seem convinced that Beckham will be signing for Chelsea. Some papers claim that Beckham's wife Victoria Adams – who has refused to move out to Madrid with her children - has demanded that her husband return to Britain in order to keep their marriage intact.
Beckham, of course, has been at the centre of various sex scandals whilst living alone in Madrid.
The truth is that he has cut a miserable figure in the Spanish capital, failing to learn the language, failing to become a media icon in Spain - and, above all, failing on the pitch.
He has scored just three ''Liga'' goals, the last one four months ago. To be fair, he has been played out of position by Carlos Quieroz, pushed back to just in front of defence in order to keep the right wing for Figo.
But even so, he has looked like a marginal, miserable figure, particularly since the run of defeats started in March.

The sending-off in Murcia epitomised Beckham's present frustration and irritation. The irony of it was that he earned his direct red card for making rare use of his primitive Spanish language skills.

He has left behind a poor image in Spain, in all senses. Probably the last time that Spanish fans will see him will have been after the Murcia expulsion, skulking off the pitch cursing all and sundry in English, looking for all the world like an unhappy man desperate to go home.
