Mandya, Oct 31: Karnataka government has given shoot at sight orders for demonstrators in Mandya, Karnataka.A curfew was clamped here yesterday following farmers’ stir in protest of the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. 500 agitating farmers were also arrested yesterday.
S M Krishna`s assembly constituency Madur falls under the four Talukas in which curfew has been clamped.
Rail and road traffic between Bangalore and Mysore remains paralysed since the agitation was resumed following the government`s decision to release water. G Madegowda, president of the Mandya district farmers protection committee also announced an indefinite fast from yesterday. He claimed that the state reservoirs would be dry if the release continued.
Over 1,000 farmers staged a dharna in front of the deputy commissioner`s office.
A Mysore report said police arrested 60 farmers who tried to proceed to the Kabini reservoir which is heavily guarded by police who have put up barricades away from the reservoir. A farmer`s suicide in the Kabini reservoir had forced the government to suspend the water release earlier, which led to filing of contempt of court petitions by Tamil Nadu against Chief Minister S M Krishna and others.
In Bangalore, prohibitory orders were clamped for three days from yesterday as a precautionary measure following threats by pro-Kannada outfits to hold protests against water release. Bureau Report
