The wreckage was recovered yesterday, a Ministry of Defence release said here today,
An extensive search lasting three days was undertaken by Indian Naval ships to determine the exact location of the crashed aircraft. The pilot had ejected from the aircraft and was rescued shortly after the crash.
The location was pinpointed using the sophisticated hydrographic equipment, in a depth of about ninety metres. The Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) provided invaluable assistance for recovering the aircraft, by way of specialised salvage and diving facilities, it said.
The wreckage has been unloaded at Goa and is likely to provide vital clues for determining the cause of the accident.
This is the second instance in the recent months of the Indian Navy successfully recovering an aircraft that had crashed at sea. In April this year, a sea king helicopter was recovered by naval ships after it had crashed off the Ratnagiri coast. In both the cases, there was no loss of life, the release added.
