New Delhi, Sept 17: Taking credit for the resolution for full statehood to Delhi, BJP today came down heavily on the Congress government for "cold shouldering" the long pending demand and said that statehood is essential for the all round development of the National Capital Territory (NCT).

Senior BJP leaders, including its national president Venkaiah Naidu, accused the Shiela Dikshit ministry of trying to extract political mileage out of the resolution passed unanimously by the Delhi Assembly last week. "Though Congress is trying to take credit, it was our resolution. We brought important amendments. But now Congress is trying to claim that it is their effort," Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Jagdish Mukhi said at a 'victory day' function here amidst staccato burst of crackers.

In his typical style, Naidu said if Congress was so keen on granting statehood where was it all these years when it was in power.
Asserting that it was the NDA government which created three new states, he said that Congress never gave the issue a serious thought when it was in power at the Centre.
Delhi BJP chief Madanlal Khurana opposed Congress demand that subjects like police and land should be retained by the Centre and said that there was no such clause in the Constitution.
He said that a five-man committee comprising Union ministers Sahib Singh Verma, Vijay Goel, MP Vijay Malhotra, Mukhi and he himself would hold talks with Congress on the future actions.
Malhotra said that Congress had not even mentioned the statehood issue anywhere in its manifesto and now out of compulsion it was supporting the statehood resolution. Union urban development minister was also present.
