Dehra Dun, Nov 17: The Nationalist Congress Party has launched a membership drive in the hill state of Uttaranchal, its state unit chief said here today.
A meeting of the party executive has been convened tomorrow at Gochar in Chamoli district where people from hilly areas would be enrolled as primary members of the party, NCP state president Surya Kant Dhasmana told reporters.
It would be followed by a similar drive at Rudraprayag district on Nov 19, dhasmana said, adding "our aim is to enroll at least 5000 members in the first such drive in the hills."
Meanwhile, the party has ruled out fielding any candidate for the by-election to Nainital Lok Sabha seat and indicated it would remain neutral.
The by-election, which was necessitated after the seat was vacated by chief minister N D Tiwari, is slated to be held on December 12. Bureau Report
