Beijing, May 30: Tibet, which has not reported a single case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, has donated about 121,065 US dollars worth of Tibetan medicine to the Chinese capital.
It is the first time that Tibet has donated to the SARS affected areas on the Chinese mainland.
Tibet along with Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan and Qinghai remained untouched by the SARS, China’s official news agency reported. China has banned the entry of tourists into Tibet. Even the annual Kailash Manasarovar Yatra undertaken by pilgrims from India has been delayed since china has closed its border so as to prevent the spread of SARS.
In a letter to Beijing's medical staff, Tibet has thanked them for their contribution to the fight against the epidemic, saying it was partly due to their efforts that it has remained SARS-free. Beijing, the worst-hit city in the world from SARS, has thus far received about 54.5 million us dollars in donations from various sectors, of which about 6.1 million US dollars has come from foreign donors.
The number of SARS cases is falling steadily in Beijing now. The city has reported 176 deaths. Bureau Report
