New Delhi: Mahmood Farooqui, co-director of Bollywood movie 'Peepli Live', was today chargesheeted by Delhi Police for allegedly raping an American research scholar at his residence here.

The charge sheet was filed in the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Devender Kumar Garg, who took cognizance of it and posted the matter for further hearing on August one.


In its charge sheet, police has alleged that Farooqui had raped a 30-year-old research scholar from Colombia University at his Sukhdev Vihar house on March 28 this year.


The charge sheet has been filed for the alleged offences punishable under sections 376 (rape) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the IPC.


Police has also annexed medical reports of the alleged victim and statements of more than a dozen witnesses including a common friend.


Farooqui was arrested on June 20 and has been in judicial custody since then.


The research scholar in her complaint filed at New Friends colony police station has alleged that Farooqui had raped her when she had gone to meet him to get his help for her research work.


She had claimed to have met Farooqui at Varanasi where she had gone to collect information about her research theme based on Baba Gorakhnath.
