Dhaka, July 15: The budget session of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad which began amidst protests from the opposition Awami League Parly last month is likely to be prorogued today, Parliament sources said. The Jaitya Sangsad, in its 24 working days, passed 19 bills, including the one enhancing perks and benefits to the Prime Minster, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, ministers and members of the Parliament. Of the 24 working days, opposition Awami League attended the proceedings for nine days and abstained from voting on the budget amidst allegations of it being "tax-laden and anti-poor." Leader of the opposition Sheikh Hasina had also alleged that the ruling alliance had "compromised with country's sovereignty" to get loans from world bank and IMF.
Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia had rejected opposition charge saying no tax had been imposed on the weaker sections and steps had been taken to benefits the disadvantaged groups. Bureau Report
