New Delhi, Jan 28: In a bid to tackle the growing menace of cyber crimes, Centre is contemplating bringing in a comprehensive legislation in this regard. The ministry of law and justice has taken preliminary steps to evolve a law against cyber crime and necessary consultation with the ministries of communications and information technology, home affairs, defence and finance were on, an official release said here today. The Information Technology Act, 2000 and the rules framed thereunder provide for punishments for various cyber crimes within the framework of the existing criminal laws, it said. But since cyber crimes were taking very sophisticated and menacing forms, a comprehensive separate law to provide deterrence was essential, it said, adding, "Absence of such a law poses a threat to the country's defence, security, economics and other such vital field of national importance."
