Bangalore, Sept 19: The Karnataka cabinet today decided to hold a judicial probe into the drowning of a gram Panchayat member at Kabini reservoir yesterday and to convene an emergent legislature session from September 24 in the wake of the ongoing crisis over the Cauvery issue. Briefing reporters after an emergency cabinet meeting following the tragedy, information minister Kagodu Thimappa said release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from the Kabini reservoir in Mysore district had been stopped and added it could not be said how long the stoppage would continue.
The cabinet, he said, also decided to hold an all party meeting in Delhi on September 21, to finalise the affidavit to be filed by the state before the Supreme Court, which has been approached by Tamil Nadu on the water release issue.
He said duration of the emergent legislature session has not been decided.
To a query, Thimappa said the state government had not received any letter from the Centre asking it to release Cauvery water till the end of October as reports suggested.
The cabinet decided to give a compensation of Rs one lakh to the next of kin of Guruswamy, Beechanahalli Gram Panchayat member, who jumped into the river and ended his life during a protest against release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, yesterday. Bureau Report
