Five miles south-east of Devanahalli on the Sulibele Road is a sacred grove or “Devara Kaadu” (in local parlance) of about 200 trees dedicated to the 12th century Lord Venugopala temple here. Although nestled in the backyard of Silicon Valley of India, its existence is virtually unknown. A noteworthy feature of this 30-acre thick Devara Kaadu is that some of the tamarind trees are believed to be the oldest in Karnataka. There are about 120 old tamarind trees aged about 600 - 800 years. The largest tree has a circumference of 50-ft and a height of about 20 feet. All these old trees have warts on their trunks. The grove also nets in some revenue every year as the Forest Department auctions the yield from these bountiful tamarind trees.
