Hyderabad, Aug 26: Andhra Pradesh authorities heaved a sigh of relief with the flood threat to Godavari river receding today following a steady decrease in rainfall in the catchment areas. The water level in Godavari at the temple town of Bhadrachalam, which went up by two ft above the second warning level of 48 ft this morning, was now receding, the state relief commissioner D C Rosaiah told reporters here.
The water level at the downstream Dowleshwaram, which had crossed the first warning level of 3.58 metres, was also receding steadily, Rosaiah said, adding the situation was well under control and there was no threat of floods to low-lying areas.
However, the authorities in Khammam, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Warangal and west Godavari districts continued to be on alert, monitoring the situation round-the-clock, he said. Meanwhile, the director of the state meteorological department C V Bhadram said Godavari river had received copious inflows due to heavy rains in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana region in the state in the last two to three days.
Since there is a decrease in the rainfall now, there will be no further increase in the water levels, he said.
Only isolated to scattered rains were likely in Godavari basin in the next 24 hours, the official said.
