Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), Dec 17: At least 24 people have been killed and scores injured in Krishna and Guntur district following incessant rains after the cyclonic storm hit the coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh last night, an official said here today. "The cyclonic storm crossed the coast between Nagayalanka and Machilipatnam at midnight, uprooting several trees in Machilipatnam and Vijayawada towns, resulting in power break down in most of the places in the district," District Collector K Prabhakar Reddy told news persons.

About 1,500 people from low laying areas in Machilipatnam were evacuated to safer places, he said.

The meteorological office said Machilipatnam recorded 15 cms rain fall during 12 hours since 8.30 pm last evening even as many other places also reported very heavy rains. Two old men died in Nagayalanka due to biting cold since yesterday morning while another person, who went to the sea, was reported missing at Koduru Mandal, Reddy said.

Due to the incessant rains, there was a sharp fall in temperature in Vijayawada prompting people to remain inside.

Meanwhile, according to district authorities around 2.5 lakh acres of paddy crop sown and harvested might have suffered damage due to the cyclone.

"The situation now is well under control and we are on job to estimate the losses," electricity authorities in Vijayawada said, adding "We are also removing the uprooted trees which fell on power lines disrupting the supply." Power supply is expected to be restored by this afternoon, they added.
