Kolkata, Sept 22: It will certainly be a record of sorts with 1.25 lakhs long-playing gramophone records, scratched and unplayable, as decoration for a jet black Durga puja pandal in south Kolkata next month. Organisers of the Bosepukur Talbagan Sarbojini Durga Utsav Samity put up posters near and far and advertised on the FM channel to procure gramophone records for their pandal decoration.
The decision to use records for fashioning the pandal to be located on the Rashbehari connector was taken after a brain wave of artist Pradip De, vice-president of the Samity Bappan Ghosh said.
"Last year we used torn clothes to decorate our puja pandal, but this year our 58 feet high pandal will be embellished solely with LP records," Ghosh said.
Dey said the idea struck him when he went to a friend's house to listen to music on gramophone records, but found to his chagrin that most were scratched and unplayable.
Since such records were worthless he hit on the idea of using them for the pandal, the artist said. Bureau Report
