New Delhi, July 22: The south-west monsoon which started on a promising note later tailed off primarily due to the pre-monsoon showers in may which altered the heat balance leading to drought in nearly 265 districts across the country, weather experts said.

Introspection is at present on why the "rains this year so far have not been up to the expectations as forecast earlier and what went wrong and where," they said. "Though monsoon is still expected to be normal this year, it changed track in June mainly because of alteration in heat balance and led to the dismal situation the country is in at present," deputy director general of Indian Council of Agricultural Research J S Samra told a news agency.

He said balance in heat before advent of rain-laden clouds is critical for onward march of the monsoon. However this year the heavy pre-monsoon showers disturbed the balance. This disturbance is responsible for the present woes of most of Indian agriculture, he added.

Samra explained that disturbed balance ensured the disappearance of low pressure which had been formed in coastal areas and brought a halt to northward movement of monsoon.

Low pressure is critical as it pulls the rain-laden clouds but with no depression at the crucial places the phenomenon did not occur this year . The situation now is not all that bad and there is some change in weather trends, but this week is going to be very crucial, he added.
