Islamabad, Sept 22: Deposed and exiled Pakistan Premier Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (N) has pledged to block all constitutional amendments that would facilitate military takeovers in future and advocated the idea of having a caretaker government before every general election. In its manifesto released here yesterday, the party said it would make all efforts to rid the nation of recurrence of military coups that pursued devastating policies, like the one which resulted in the separation of Bangladesh.
PML-N said it would also work for the appointment of services chiefs by the president on the advice of the Prime Mininster and limit the scope and functioning of military intelligence to security and counter-terrorism measures.
Promising to "restore" the supremacy of the Constitution and parliament by making parliamentary institutions effective, accountable and responsive to people, it said a new political order of consultation with the opposition would be enforced.
The poll document also agreed to the idea of a caretaker government before every general election.
Criticising the economic policies pursued by Musharraf government, it said the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate had declined over the past three years and people groaned under tax burden and price hikes.
The law and order situation too has deteriorated and tension increased between the federating units, it said. Bureau Report
