True to reel life, Bollywood style, the police were the last to arrive. The women community workers of Yamuna Pushta stole the show, rescuing a minor girl who was being raped over the last three years by her brother-in-law. The girl was produced on Saturday evening before the police.

And true to real life, after the protagonists triumphantly walked away, the grind of investigations and case preparations started for the policemen, lasting till the wee hours of Sunday morning when the victim, Beena, was finally lodged in Nirmal Chhaya Observation Home for Girls.

On Friday evening, Beena's brother-in-law had brought her to a local doctor's clinic where she managed to tell her story to one of the women from the Pushta, Poornima. Poornima immediately insisted on taking the girl with her. "I did not want to leave her behind. After all, I too have daughters of her age. She was trembling and there were bruises all over her body, " she said. Poornima alerted other women in her locality and they immediately went to the Seelampur basti, where Beena stayed with her sister, Sita (name changed).
They complained to a local police personnel who dismissed the matter saying that Beena's family quarreled all the time. By Saturday afternoon, Sita arrived at the Pushta along with some people of her locality insisting that Beena be sent back.

"How could we send the girl back with them? Beena had already told us that Sita, who has two children and is pregnant again, knew that she was being raped by her husband but was powerless to do anything as he thrashed both of them often," said Zeenat, one of the Pushta women. My mother died when I was very young and my father has gone mad. So my sister brought me to Delhi to stay with her. Initially, everything was fine, but as I grew older my brother-in-law started making advances and then he raped me.

He used to rape me almost everyday during the last three years. My sister did try to protest but he would just beat up both of us," said Beena who seems to be about 14-years-old. The women took her to the Pushta police chowki. Chowki-in-charge Sunil Sharma immediately swung into action.
