An army officer was killed and three soldiers were injured in shelling by Pakistan forces along the Line of Control in Baramulla district, apparently aimed at pushing armed militants into the Kashmir Valley, official sources said.
Major Maeek Ahuja was killed and three jawans were injured when an artillery shell fired from across the border exploded near a forward observatory post of the Army at Dadhonandan in Gurez sector in the early hours Thursday, they said.

The shelling started Wednesday evening forcing the troops to retaliate in self defence, the sources said. It stopped around midnight, but was resumed early Thursday when Major Ahuja was leading his men to lay ambush along possible infiltration routes of militants.
The shelling was continuing when last reports were received.
Low intensity shelling from across the border was also reported from Keran, Karnah and Teetwal sectors of Kupwara district and Batalik in Kargil sector since Wednesday night, they said, adding no casualty was reported. Bureau Report
