Hong Kong, July 28: University students in Hong Kong are to study Real Madrid football star David Beckham as part of a sociology course into the popularity of football, a news report said today.

A case study on Beckham, currently in China on a pre-season tour with the Spanish giants, will be included in the course entitled ''the world of football, a social science perspective'', which kicks off in Hong Kong's Chinese University in January.
Recommended reading for the course included a best-selling biography of Beckham by Ellis Cashmore and Nick Hornby's book about British football, fever pitch, according to the south China Morning Post. Sociology professor Lui Tak-Lok will lead the course, which is believed to be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
He told the newspaper: ''Beckham is by no means the player with the best technical skills in the world but he has emerged as the most important icon of the sport. We will discuss how a superstar has been manufactured, on and off the pitch.''
Real Madrid paid 40 million USD for Beckham, who will play in Hong Kong August 8 after appearances with Real Madrid in Beijing and Tokyo.
