Islamabad, July 23: Deposed premier Nawaz Sharif's brother Shahbaz Sharif might return to head the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) ahead of the October elections, media reports published today said. "If anyone from the family returns to Pakistan, it would be former chief minister of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif. That option is being considered," a report published in daily 'Dawn' said.

Discussions are taking place at the residence of Nawaz Sharif in Jeddah, where Sharif is in exile, to decide the next leader of Pakistan Muslim League, the report said adding "indications are that Shahbaz Sharif is ready to return to Pakistan to lead the Muslim League." "If some understanding is reached between the family and the military government, the younger Sharif may go to Pakistan," the report quoting party sources said.

Some earlier reports had indicated that during the crisis between the government and the military leadership in 1999, Army Chief Gen Musharraf had indicated that Shahbaz Sharif could be acceptable to the army top brass. The proposal, however, was turned down by Sharifs then, Dawn said.
According to the report, several party veterans and a journalist were in Jeddah trying to work reconciliation with the government and the Sharifs.

The paper quoted PML leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi saying that the family is keeping a tight control on party affairs from Jeddah and that Sharif was himself reviewing the list of party candidates for the October 10 poll.
