Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) on Tuesday, axed seven olympians, inclding Dhanraj Pillay, Mukesh Kumar and Mohd Riaz, and inducted nine debutants in a new look team that will represent the country in world cup qualifiers be held at Edinburgh from July 17 to 29.
The other olympians who do not figure in the 18-member-team to be led by Baljit Singh Dhillon are Deepak Thakur, S S Gill, Dinesh Nayak and former captain Ramandeep Singh.
The new faces in the team are Arun Halappa, R Ratha Krishnan, Pabhjot Singh, Daljit Singh Dhillon, Bipin Fernandes, Kanwalpreet Singh, Bimal Lakra, Parminder Singh and Brojen Singh.
Coach Cedric D'souza, however, said that the team going for the qualifiers was not the team that would play in the world cup. “We have another camp coming up in short time and we would certainly look at the others players for inclusion in the world cup team if their performance was up to mark and they were fully fit,” he said. The team has been placed in group 'a' along with New Zealand, Egypt and Wales in the qualifiers. India plays its first match against Wales on July 18, second against New Zealand on July 19 and the third against Egypt on July 21.
