Beijing, Apr 29: China, the world's most populous nation, has joined the ranks of countries with a low birth rate, the official media reported. Citing a recent survey by the state statistics bureau, it reported that the human reproduction in china has entered a period featuring low birth rate, low death rate, and low increase.

China has thus become a country with low birth rate, the report said without giving the figures.

China's population reached 1.29277 billion in 2003, accounting for 21 per cent of the world population.

China has been working hard to curb the fast rise of population. Its basic policy of strictly controlling increase of population and improving people's quality has made outstanding achievements, the "China International Seminar on Census 2000" was told.
The family planning policy plays an important role in promoting Chinese economy, speeding up social progress and enhancing people's living standards. It also gives basis for China's overall, coordinated and sustainable development.

In addition, this policy has contributed to easing the pressure of too fast population increase in the world, an official with the state statistics bureau said.

The world population has doubled since 1960s. In 2003, the world population reached 63 billion. Ninety-five per cent of the increased population comes from developing countries. The fast increase imposes more pressure on the global environment and resources.
However, the increase has slowed down in rent ten years due to joint effort of all countries in the world, the repot noted.
