Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran on Tuesday ruled out curbing of imports from China and said India had provided the Most-Favoured Nation (MFN) status to that country though it was not a WTO member.
Maran, however, said India`s exports to China have registered a quantum jump of 63 per cent as against imports of 35.5 per cent from Beijing. He said the anti-dumping mechanism in India was one of the best in the world, and added that only seven cases were pending with the Anti-Dumping authority, he added.
On the fears of large-scale imports of agricultural commodities, he said the "War Room" created by the Ministry will make available the level of imports figures every month to monitor the inflows. He said rice imports to India in value terms stood at Rs11.5 crore during April-Dec 2000 as against Rs 24.6 crore during the corresponding period the previous year.
Maran said the Government had taken action against import of dry cells and sports shoes from China. Bureau Report
