British foreign secretary Jack straw on Saturday hailed as historic the resolution adopted unanimously overnight by the United Nations Security Council to combat world terrorism.
For the first time the Security Council is imposing obligations on all states to join together in the fight against terrorism, he said in a statement.
The Security Council took barely 24 hours to approve the US-sponsored resolution obliging member states to crack down on the sources of financial and logistical support for terrorist groups.
All states owe it to the victims of the World Trade Center attacks and other terrorist atrocities to implement these measures, Straw said, noting that a number of them were already in force in Britain through the Terrorism Act 2000. “We are, nonetheless, considering urgently what further domestic legislation may be required,” he added.
