Trai wants Internet on cellphones New Delhi/Hyderabad, Dec 31: The Centre approved different number codes for cellphone companies, even as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India directed cellular and basic service operators to provide Internet access to their subscribers within 45 days. Following the Trai order, cellular subscribers will be able to access the Internet like their landline counterparts.

In Hyderabad, T V Ramachandran, director-general of the Cellular Operators Association of India, told Deccan Chronicle: “Some cellular operators already had WAP services, but the Trai order is welcome. Cellular operators can offer Internet access immediately be-cause the technology is available.”

The speed will depend on the ISP, he said. “Non-GPRS providers may have some difficulty in providing fast downloads. It will also depend on the number of users for the service,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Centre accepted the telecom regulator’s proposal for change in numbering scheme for mobile phones.

Reliance is likely to get the ‘93’ series, Tatas the ‘97’ series and Bharti the ‘92’ series. Smaller players would remain in the ‘98’ series.

“We are agreeable Trai’s proposal for change in numbering and have decided that a 30-day period should be given to operators to switch over to the new numbering scheme,” Telecom Secretary Vinod Vaish said.

“The scheme is a big exercise and every operator has to be given an MSC code for each circle; we are working out the details and the decision would be announced on Wednesday,” Vaish said.
