Phulbani, Sept 20: With eight people dead and nearly 300 affected, gastro-enteritis has assumed epidemic proportions in some villages of Orissa's Boudh district, official sources said today.

Steps to combat the spread of the disease in the last one month in eight villages of Baunsuni block in the district had been taken on a war-footing, chief district medical officer, Dr Gokul Chandra Hota said. The local independent MLA Pradip Amat, however, claimed that the disease had so far taken a toll of 17 lives in the area during the period.

Four mobile health teams had been sent to the area with sufficient amounts of halogen tablets, Oral Dehydration Solution (ORS) packets, bleaching powder and medicines. A control room to monitor the situation was set up at the district headquarter hospital at Boudh. The situation, however, was under control, Hota said.

Contaminated water was suspected to be the main cause of the outbreak of the disease. Bureau Report
