Mumbai, July 26: A special court will deliver its order on bail plea of seven accused in the answer paper scam that rocked Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) today even as one of the prime accused was remanded to police custody till August 7 yesterday.

Mohammed Salim Hamidulla, held yesterday, was produced before the designated Judge P N Deshmukh who remanded him to custody. According to ACB, he had printed bogus answer papers at his printing press and was deeply involved in the crime. ACB opposed the bail plea of seven accused in the answer paper scam saying that investigation was incomplete and probe may be hampered if they were released on bail.

The seven accused are former MPSC chairman S D Karnik, Controller of Examination (MPSC) Sudhakar Sarode, Deputy Superintendent of Police Baban Kadam, Eknath Vezere and Sunil Patil, employees of State Secretariat, Computer Expert Farooq Karge and alleged conduit Manisha Nichat. Karnik, in his bail plea, denied ACB charges and said he was innocent. His lawyer Satish Maneshinde and Sayaji Nangre submitted that Karnik did not have the custody of keys of cupboard in which original answer papers were stored.

They also denied the ACB charge that Karnik had assets worth Rs three crore for which he could not account for and refuted allegations that the assets had been acquired from the scam money. As regards the flat in South Mumbai, Karnik gave details about the money collected by him for its purchase. Karnik said the decision to allow candidates to appear for main examination and rescanning of answer sheets was not a unilateral decision but taken by all MPSC members.
